Climbing apparel brand So iLL will release a new vegan shoe line made in partnership with actor Jason Momoa—of Aquaman and Game of Thrones fame. The iLL x On The Roam Collection features two colorways (Unity Purple and Yaya Lavender) of vegan sneakers made with sustainable materials such as an organic cotton upper, a top layer of cork, and biodegradable outsoles. The insoles are made by BLOOM Foam, a company that turns harmful algae growths into sustainable materials. The shoes—which are part of a larger collection that includes bags, masks, and more made from recycled bottles—are available for pre-order now and will begin shipping in June.

Is Jason Momoa vegan?

While Momoa is not vegan, the native Hawaiian actor is outspoken about environmental issues. In 2019, Momoa spoke on behalf of island nations at a United Nations event where he explained that the pollution generated by developed countries is wreaking havoc on the environment and developing island nations. “We are a disease that is infecting our planet. From the atmosphere to the abyssal zone, we are polluted,” Momoa said. “We have to change now. We can no longer afford the luxury of half-assing it as we willingly force ourselves beyond the threshold of no return. As a human species we need the earth to survive. And make no mistake, it doesn’t need us.”

Momoa is also behind Manalau, a water company that uses recyclable aluminum cans instead of plastic bottles. To promote his mission of ridding the world of single-use plastics, Momoa shaved his iconic beard in a 2019 YouTube video that has since gained more than 8.5 million views. “We’ve gotta get rid of these plastic water bottles,” Momoa said. “Aquaman is trying to do the best he can; for my kids, for your kids, for the world.”
