Back in July, Khloe Kardashian’s son Tatum Thompson celebrated his second birthday with lots and lots of dinosaurs. Everything was dinosaur-themed, including the decor, the activities, and even the food, thanks to Chef Khristianne Uy, or as she’s more widely known Chef K. The event caterer and private chef is a favorite of the Kardashians thanks to her innovative, creative approach to cooking. For Tatum’s birthday dessert, she even created a chocolate mousse dinosaur excavation for the kids, using 100-percent plant-based ingredients.

Are the Kardashians vegan?

Khloe Kardashian isn’t vegan, and neither is the rest of her family, including her older sisters, Kourtney and Kim. However, Kourtney has spoken out about being 95 percent plant-based in the past, and that’s largely thanks to her husband, Travis Barker, who is totally vegan.

“We’ve always loved animals, and we choose not to eat animals,” Barker told PETA back in 2017, referring to his and his daughter Alabama’s dietary choices. “We choose a vegan and vegetarian lifestyle. We have a pig that’s so smart, and to think that people still eat them is insane.”

Because of Barker and Kourtney’s plant-forward lifestyle, Chef K is used to preparing vegan meals. “They’re hands down just so wholesome, appreciative, just so grateful every single time,” she said, speaking about the couple to Vogue back in 2021. “It’s hard to turn them down.”

How to make Chef K’s vegan dinosaur dessert

In a Reel posted to Instagram, Khloe raved about Chef K’s dinosaur spread for Thompson’s birthday. She wrote on the post “We love a [Chef K] moment.”

Chef K’s birthday spread for Tatum wasn’t entirely plant-based, due to the inclusion of chicken nugget dinosaurs, but it was pretty vegan-friendly, thanks to the chocolate mousse dinosaur excavation and fruit cut into dinosaur shapes.

The dinosaur excavation can be recreated at home using a few simple ingredients. In fact, to help you make it from scratch, Chef K posted a video on TikTok with clear instructions on how to make each layer of the dessert at home.

The base, for example, is made with avocados, Califia Farms Heavy Whip cream, cocoa powder, Dutch cocoa, vanilla extract, salt, and maple syrup, which is then whipped up in a blender or food processor. After that, it’s onto the “cookie soil,” which is made with vegan chocolate cookies, plant-based butter, powdered sugar, and cocoa powder.

“Mix everything in a bowl,” instructs Chef K, and “spread on a sheet tray and bake at 350 for 12 mins. Let cool.” She continues: “Place in a food processor and pulse until fine or it resembles the texture of sand. Top with white chocolate “bones” and edible rocks and/or flowers. Devour!!!”

Cooking plant-based food with the Kardashians

While Chef K regularly whips up treats for the Kardashians, they also cook for themselves, too. Last year, for example, Khloe teamed up with her mom, Kris Jenner, and her daughter True, to make crispy rice treats with Country Crock’s Plant Butter. “I feel so excited because I’ve been trying to do less dairy, and I’ve been trying to find swaps where you don’t taste the difference,” said Khloe at the time.

Kim has also experimented with plant-based cooking. Last year, she shared a recipe for a veggie-laden vegan pizza on Kourtney’s wellness platform Poosh. The pizza featured a cauliflower crust, Violife vegan cheese, basil pesto, zucchini, sun-dried tomatoes, marinated baby artichokes, broccoli florets, and corn.

“Kim has a special knack for creating the most delicious comfort foods out of clean ingredients and making fully vegan dishes,” Poosh captioned the post. “When she shared this colorful, loaded pizza recipe with us, we couldn’t wait to try it.”

Both Kim and Kourtney are also a fan of plant-based meats. In 2022, Kim was named Beyond Meat’s “Chief Taste Consultant,” while Kourtney and Barker have appeared in several campaigns for the vegan chicken brand Daring.

“I’ve been on a health and wellness journey for the past 13 years, which has made me super conscious of what I put into my body and my kids’ bodies,” Kourtney said in a statement at the time. “I’m not fully vegan, but Travis has helped me keep to a mostly plant-based diet, which is so much easier with Daring.”
