Los Angeles is a major vegan hub. Earlier this year, the Southern California metropolis was named one of the world’s Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities by HappyCow. In fact, the City of Angels consistently ranks among the platform’s top cities for vegans, and for good reason.

Jump to the restaurants

According to HappyCow, Central Los Angeles alone is home to 652 vegan-friendly businesses, 61 entirely vegan restaurants, and 145 various vegan businesses. But while vegans may be spoiled for choice in LA, the high cost of living can often be a barrier to venturing out to try new, plant-based eateries.

VegNews.LosAngeles

“The overall cost of living in Los Angeles is 8% higher than the state average and 50% higher than the national average,” Minal Zaheer reports for Yahoo! Finance. “Housing costs contribute significantly to this disparity, being 20% higher than the state average and an alarming 137% higher than the national average. Additionally, transportation costs are also 25% higher than the national average,” Zaheer continues.

Despite the higher-than-average cost of living, Los Angeles is home to a plethora of restaurants offering plant-based dishes, whole meals, and desserts for under $15.

3Mr. Charlie’s

Immediately after opening its doors to the public back in 2022, Mr. Charlie’s took TikTok by storm. Dubbed the “vegan McDonald’s” for its vegan take on the fast-food giant, Mr. Charlie’s found fans among Hollywood stars such as Lizzo and former NBA player John Salley. However, the viral chain wasn’t without its critics, with many criticizing the chain for its pricing.

Mr. Charlie’s, however, took note and would go on to launch Not a Hamburger Mondays. Every Monday, customers can purchase a Not a Hamburger (a vegan burger made with an Impossible patty, onions, pickles, ketchup, and mustard) for just $0.99. Note: there is a limit of two per customer.
